Virginia Hall flames off the pages of ‘A Woman of No Importance.’  the embodiment of integrity: saw what needed to be done & did it in the face of overwhelming odds of evil & danger. not to mention sexism & her own physical condition. must have felt that everything & everyone was against her, yet somehow she persisted. there’s a reason you were guided to this story.

there’s so much tragedy in poverty, & you witnessed it alone in [public assistance] clients’ homes when you were in your very early 20s. made a lasting impact & you’ve always fiercely refuted ‘welfare queen’ claims afterward.

political divisiveness prevails to the detriment & peril of all. wish you could feel you’re over-reacting. also know well the power of hope. do what you can, dear one. trust that common sense & the common good will triumph.

Dominant Hand: If I hear from her again I’ll tell her I listen [to NPR and BBC] partly to honor the sacrifices being made. I’m incensed by the way the pandemic’s been mismanaged but the repercussions need to be heard & heroes & victims acknowledged. Tuning out seems incredibly selfish.

Alternate Hand: know many people who’d disagree with your belief. certainly have the right to govern their own lives. but willful ignorance allows for dangerous outcomes. history’s filled with stark examples. ’it can’t happen here’ has proven to be a fallacy over & over. don’t know answers but feel obligation to be aware & informed. the least – and possibly most – you can do now. also imperative to find & share joy.

have always been haunted by history’s tragic stories. get angry at others’  arrogant indifference about them: why stories are doomed to be repeated. feel country and world are in very dark time now. so easy to slip past the tipping point.

have always felt tenderness toward the earth. remember joy of seeing home movie of you as very small child holding armful of flowers & smiling at the camera. felt like verification of life’s work, a cause you were literally born to pursue. resulting beauty is a lovely bonus.

you see hypocrisy in many forms, some likely to merit a term that’s less harsh. giving the benefit of the doubt is kinder, dear one. kindness is part of integrity, as is humility. those words even feel soothing.
